The Pediatric Council on Research and Education (PCORE) is the charitable arm of the American Academy of Pediatrics/New Jersey Chapter (AAP/NJ) that is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children in the state of New Jersey.

PCORE 's mission is accomplished by working to improve health policies and practices, and to educate parents and primary care providers on preventative health topics within the context of a Medical Home framework. PCORE and its successful partnerships with local and state agencies help promote wellness and prevent illness, abuse, and neglect among children in New Jersey.

HealthyChildren.org Launches Kids Doc Symptom Checker

HealthyChildren.org has a new interactive tool to help parents evaluate their child's symptoms. Based on Pediatric Telephone Protocols, by Barton D. Schmitt, M.D., FAAP, the "KidsDoc Symptom Checker" allows parents to choose from a wide range of symptoms, and then follow the symptom decision chart to determine the appropriate action to take, whether it be home care or a call to the pediatrician. The tool is also available as an iPhone application called KidsDoc, providing the same expert advice when parents are on the go

"Sometimes Foods vs. Everyday Foods" - Children from our Healthy Choices Program drew, wrote and provided the voices for a clever and creative educational DVD cartoon production that teaches children how important it is to make smart food choices.

AAP NJ and PCORE, in partnership with the Childhood Influenza Immunization Coalition, have created a Web site with posters, brochures, and information about the seriousness of influenza and the importance of annual influenza vaccination. All materials are free to download.

Special Alert - NJ Poison Center in Jeopardy

The New Jersey Poison Information and Education System (NJPIES, New Jersey's Poison Control Center) is a non-profit organization that coordinates the treatment and distribution of information concerning poisons, drugs and targeted health issues through telephone management, consultation, education and research. NJPIES requests your help in our efforts to restore funding, to find alternate sources to provide at least the local support at “maintenance level” sufficient to avoid the cut in federal support, and prevent future cuts in financial support.

The New Jersey Department of Children and Families and Casey Family Programs launched an important campaign - Raise Me Up - designed to inspire people to support children in foster care and prevent child abuse and neglect in communities throughout New Jersey. New Jersey's children need our help.The primary message of the Raise Me Up campaign is: “You don't have to raise a foster child to raise them up. You just have to raise your hand and say you'll help.”

Princeton's 'Summit for Children's Health' report now available online

The Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton has posted its "Summit for Children's Health" report on their Web site. The Policy Research Institute for the Region (PRIOR) released the publication “Summit for Children’s Health in New Jersey," drawn from the conference held in the fall of 2008. Children’s health care in New Jersey continues to encounter serious challenges, as evidenced by the state’s bottom-quartile ranking in the Commonwealth Fund’s recent Child Health System Performance State Scorecard.
